Have you began your resolutions for 2021? We challenge you to improve your oral health this year! Your oral hygiene is vital in maintaining your oral health. Keeping the bacteria in your mouth under control not only maintains the appearance of your smile, but also decrease your risk of heart disease, diabetes, respiratory disease, osteoporosis, and rheumatoid arthritis. This year, take care of your smile and your health by following these rules.

Brush, Floss, and Rinse! In addition to brushing twice a day, flossing removes plaque between teeth. Remember- floss before you brush so that you are brushing away any left remaining or loose particles. You also should brush your tongue to remove bacteria. Don’t skip mouthwash! Mouthwash prevents gum disease by killing bacteria left behind, as well as prevents the buildup of plaque and strengthens enamel.

Schedule Regular Cleanings! At home care is not enough- see your hygienist twice a year. Dental cleanings ensure that plaque and tartar are removed, giving you a better chance of maintaining a healthy oral health status. Your hygienist and dentists also check for oral cancer, the signs of gum disease and bone loss.

Kick the Tobacco Habit! It is nothing new that tobacco use increased your chance for tooth decay. It weakens your immune system making it harder for you to fight off sickness, including gum disease. Using tobacco will also make it more difficult for your gums to heal. Because tobacco produces can irritate gum tissue, your gums can loosen around your teeth making it easier for bacteria to creep in.

Eat Mouth Healthy Foods! You are what you eat, right? When you eat food, you do not only feed yourself, but the bacteria living in your mouth. They thrive on starch and sugars! Acid from food can attack your teeth for over 20 minutes after eating. Feed your body (and your teeth) fibrous foods (apples and carrots), cut back on added sugar, and calcium rich products (dairy products).
